For Sacramento Division (14 to 18-year-old) cadets,  the Type III uniform is earned after completing the Qualifications Card (Qual Card), [a booklet] that contains the basics every cadet should know by heart. Once signed off, the issued NWU Type I (blue digital) is then set aside in your issued uniforms ready for future trainings.

For Training Ship California (10 to 13-year-old) League Cadets, the NWU Type III's are issued to all as the League's orientation to the program is continuous. Upon "Fleet-up," cadets will wear the NWU Type I uniform, be issued the Recruit ball cap, and meet the Qual Card requirement to earn the NWU Type III as a member of the Sacramento Division.

All officers and cadets alike should understand and know which uniform components or items are within regulation and permitted by the Commanding Officer for Sacramento Division and TS California. For example, all members of the USNSCC will wear the black 8" high black combat style boots as the tan boots in any type are not permitted.

Note that the undershirt worn with the NWU Type III is not blue but Coyote Brown.

The 8 point cover is restricted to cadets who have promoted to SA (E-2)[having completed RTC / Boot camp] and for the League cadets, Apprentice Cadet (LC-2). Boot Camp is not available to League Cadets and though Orientation training is not required, it is strongly recommended. All cadets below these rates/ranks will be issued Recruit ball caps to be worn with both the NWU Type I and III.

Proper respect for all uniforms is not an option. Because you may be eligible to wear the Type III does not lessen the value of the Type I NWU. We have enjoyed our freedom; Respect to those who served in these uniforms is more than deserved. All gave some and some gave all.

NWU TYPE III: Nametapes & Flash

Nametapes are just what they sound like; a name on fabric tapes.

The name of the branch of the program for the junior 10 to 13-year-olds is the United States Navy League Cadet Corps (USNLCC) and the more senior, 14 to 18-year-old cadets, is the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC).

These Branch Tapes have a hook and loop [Velcro style] backing sewn onto them and they are placed above the left front blouse pocket on the chest.

The Nametapes [with your last names] also have a hook and loop backing sewn onto the tape and is placed above the right front blouse pocket on the chest. A second Nametape with the last name was provided for the Type III trousers that does not require the hook and loop fastener. This nametape should be sewn above the right rear pocket on the trousers.

The rectangle shoulder Flash for the NSCC is affixed with the "crow's" beaks facing forward. The NLCC Flash has an anchor that is universal and needs only to be affixed (hook and loop) to the proper place on the shoulders.

The NSCC and NLCC Flash should be sewn center in the front of the 8 point Cover (cap).

The Type III blouse and Type I & III Parka Liners and Parkas are equipped with tabs for the ranks of Petty Officer 3rd (PO3) through 1st Class (PO1), Ships Leading Petty Officer (SLPO), Chief (CPO),  Instructor, Midshipman and officers "loops" that slip on the tabs and are secured with hook and loop closures.

Never Glue Flash or Nametapes to any uniform!

Never iron over Flash on any uniform!

NAVY WORKING UNIFORM (NWU)

TYPE III

Much should be said for this uniform. The USNSCC remains proud to wear the NWU I and those of us who will still put the Type I NWU will store it with our issued uniforms when not in use. You will wear it:

  • if you are most likely...

  1. a new NSCC member

  2. have not gone to RTC (Boot Camp)

  3. have not completed the Qual Card

  4. are going to a training and need a second or third Navy Working Uniform

In cold or wet weather, the NWU Type I uniform can be worn with the NWU Type I Parka and / or black (Parka) Liner.

If you have not completed RTC you will be issued a Recruit Ball Cap to be worn instead of the 8 point Cover shown.

Proper respect for all uniforms is not an option. Because you may be eligible to wear the Type III does not lessen the value of the Type I NWU. We have enjoyed our freedom; Respect to those who served in these uniforms is more than deserved. All gave some and some gave all.

Machine wash your buttoned Navy Working Uniforms turned inside out in warm water with detergent. Do not use bleach or starch them.

"When will I be issued the green digital NWU Type III?

You must complete the Qualification Card (booklet) referred to as the Qual Card (shown above) and signed off, or complete RTC (Boot Camp). The Type III Navy Working Uniform is earned, not purchased or a right.

"When will I be able to exchange the Recruit Ball Cap?"

You must complete the BMR to promote from Recruit Cadet (RC) to Seaman Apprentice-Temporary (SA-T),  then complete RTC (Boot Camp) which will finish the process of becoming a  Seaman Apprentice and no longer Temporary
